There is a plethora of complementary and alternative therapies available today, so how does one know what to choose?
Choose one that speaks to you most intimately, one that you resonate with. Our meeting with a particular modality may be a synchronistic event that will lead to other meetings and possibilities. Even if something turns out not to be what speaks to us most at a particular time, we wouldn’t have known that if not for the experience we had with it.
What is the most important factor in choosing the right therapy for me?
The therapist. Just like two cups of coffee served at the same cafe can taste different depending on the person who makes it and the experience of visiting two different doctors can be a world apart, the most important factor in choosing a therapy is how you feel about the therapist. The client-therapist relationship is the foundation upon which any and all work is based.
Why do you offer the types of therapies that you do, and how do they relate to one another?
As unique individuals on a process of exploration, we may be more open and receptive of a particular therapy at a certain time in our life. Although the intention of all the therapies that I offer is to promote and deepen awareness, they each have a particular form and process, and one can speak more directly to us than another. Rolfing and Rolf Movement enters the process from a physical level, while Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy offers a more subtle and energetic contact. Finally, Core Process Psychotherapy offers us the form to integrate our body, mind and spirit in our enquiry into our human experience.
It is my intention to bring awareness to the felt sense in all the therapies that I practice, especially Core Process Psychotherapy and Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy as they offer the form for this enquiry more directly. The felt sense is not a physical or emotional experience that we can name, but a vague bodily knowing of something. This sense of vagueness, before an experience is given a name and thus a value, is the open potential where clarity can arise. Clarity leads to awareness and thus to healing.
Can I have sessions with you in all the different therapies?
Unfortunately, no. I am able to work with the same client in all therapies except for Core Process Psychotherapy. If you come to me as a Core Process Psychotherapy client, I am not able to see you in any other capacity. However, I can work with you as a client in Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy, Rolfing and Rolf Movement work. Core Process Psychotherapy requires a very mindful and careful holding of space and boundaries for it to be effective. Please read more under the Core Process Psychotherapy Q&A.
Do you work with Trauma Resolution and Pre- and Perinatal Psychology?
A solid understanding of Trauma Resolution work and Pre- and Perinatal Psychology is the foundation of my practice as a therapist. Core Process Psychotherapy and Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy offer the opportunity to work with these areas directly in a session. Rolfing and Rolf Movement, however, are not modalities that lend directly to these kinds of work, but knowledge and familiarity in these areas allows me to offer clients a more comprehensive holding in sessions and thus respond with more depth and attunement to their needs.
